The seventh generation of Pixel smartphones is here and again consists of two smartphones: Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. But what has changed compared to its predecessors? We give you an overview of the new features of the Pixel Duo.
Google introduced the latest Pixel generation and showed off other innovations in a live stream. This includes the Pixel Watch, Google’s first own smartwatch. We were able to take a look at the new devices at the Google offices in Berlin and get a first impression
We’ve known the design of the new Pixel smartphone for months. Google itself announced the Pixel 7 (Pro) at I/O 2022 and gave the first details. But especially in the last few days, one leak has followed the next, revealing the Pixel Duo almost entirely.
Refined design and face unlock
For the 7th generation, Google has taken the eye-catching design of the 6 model (reviewed here) and refined it a bit. The biggest change concerns the camera band, which is no longer made of glass but aluminum and flows smoothly into the frame. However, the glass back is still shiny. Also, there is an IP68 certification, which means the devices are completely protected against water and dust.
This is ahead Google Pixel 7 Pro Again a 6.7-inch OLED panel with LTPO technology, adaptive 120 Hz and QHD+ resolution. However, since Google has slightly reduced the size of the Pixel 7 “non-pro”, the display has also shrunk slightly to 6.3 inches. However, you can also expect an OLED panel here, but then with 90 Hz and FHD+ resolution. Apart from the in-display fingerprint sensor, which will hopefully be a bit more precise, you can look forward to a face unlock (finally!). However, it is questionable how safe it is to classify without 3D sensors.
Inside is the new Tensor G2 SoC
Under the hood, the Tensor G2 is the second generation of Google’s own chip. The SoC is manufactured at 4 nm and gets a bit more performance through higher clock rates. While the first leaked benchmarks show that performance shouldn’t quite keep up with Qualcomm & Co.’s top SoCs — it doesn’t need to. First and foremost, three aspects of the chip should be specifically improved: language processing (translation), photo and video, and security. The Titan M2 security chip is then on board.
Also, 8GB (Pixel 7) or 12GB (Pixel 7 Pro) RAM is available. You can then choose between 128 GB or 256 GB of internal storage. At 5,000 mAh, the Pixel 7 Pro’s battery is the same as its predecessor, but smaller dimensions mean more capacity. Pixel 7 However, that has shrunk to 4,335 mAh (about 300 mAh less). Unfortunately, it’s still unclear how fast the new Pixel smartphones will charge. Google will likely share more details here in the near future.
More zoom in on Pro and new software features
The Pixel 7 (Pro)’s focus is back on the camera. Although the sensors have changed little, the software functions have a few new features. But first everything is in order: a 50 megapixel sensor is used as the main camera, accompanied by a 12 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera. Both the smartphones now have a 10.8 MP front camera for selfies.
that Google Pixel 7 Pro There’s also a telephoto camera with periscope zoom on offer again, now a bit closer with 4.8x optical zoom (previously “only” 4.0x). However, Google solves this with a slightly smaller sensor with an area of 1/2.55″ instead of 1/2.0″, probably because there is no room for more lenses. Still: Google’s “superrace zoom” has significantly drilled into the back. Above all, the quality of the results should be improved. The Pixel 7 Pro can “digitally” zoom up to 30x.
Google’s well-known excellent photo software is expanded with the Pixel 7 (Pro) with a macro focus, which, in combination with an autofocus, ensures better close-ups with ultra wide angles. There will also be a new video mode with cinematic blur, real-time depth of field and overall improved stabilization.
Price and pre-order bonus
Google is soon going to launch the Pixel smartphone in the market. Although Apple has made its iPhones 200-300 euros more expensive, this is how it starts Google Pixel 7 again at 649 euros RRP on Lemongrass, Obsidian and Snow. that Pixel 7 Pro costs 899 euros RRP and offered in Hazel, Obsidian and Snow. Upgrading to more memory costs 100 euros extra.
Who is a smartphone? Pre-ordered until October 17, can secure a nice bonus. The Pixel 7 comes with the new Pixel Buds Pro in-ear headphones (on review here) for free. The Pixel 7 Pro comes with the fresh Pixel Watch LTE (worth €429 RRP) as a goodie.
