With the Pixel 8a, Google is sending the first smartphone in the race that already includes a repair mode.
It hasn’t been around for long and only now is the first Google smartphone available in stores (Pixel 8a) that comes with the new repair mode. This is a function that protects your Pixel smartphone and more precisely, your data in case your Pixel needs to be repaired.
In the past, you had to back up your data and ideally, ship your smartphone empty. or returned empty. However, the new repair mode enables repair with full protection for your data and without a reset – if the problem is not related to the respective components.
Data is safe from third party users
According to Google, Repair Mode is a safe environment where the device is repaired. It is used to protect apps and personal data such as photos, messages and contacts from other people’s access. If you exit repair mode when you get your device back, your phone will return to normal mode.
The system does not permanently save the changes and adjustments made in repair mode. It is also required that at least 2 GB of memory is free. The function can be found in the settings of your Pixel cell phone and there you will find the area under “System”.
Samsung and other manufacturers may offer similar features for much longer. Google delayed again, with Repair Mode not rolling out for Pixel devices until December 2023.
