GoPro has announced its next flagship action camera: the GoPro Hero 12 Black. If you want to capture as much of your adventure as possible with the GoPro Enduro battery and record footage continuously, the new camera has a number of notable features, including long runtime support.
According to GoPro, the new boot times are made possible by a redesigned power management system. You may be able to see a 2x improvement in boot time with the new system compared to the previous generation Hero 11 Black. (Note, however, that the GoPro 2x rating is based on using the Enduro battery included with the Hero 12. If you’re using a standard GoPro battery, you’ll see different run times.)
If you want to record videos with your GoPro for platforms like TikTok and YouTube Shorts, the Hero 12 Black offers a new vertical recording mode in 16:9 format. This, combined with support for Bluetooth wireless audio devices like AirPods and microphones, means the Hero 12 could be a solid choice for content creators who want to make vertical videos easier.
The Hero 12 Black offers some features that even professionals can love. Capture HDR photos and videos in 5.3K (up to 30 fps at 16:9) and 4K (up to 30 fps at 8:7 and up to 60 fps at 16:9) while greater dynamic range thanks to additional GP log-encoding recording. You can also use Timecode Sync for an “unlimited” Hero 12 Black camera, making it easy to edit your multi-angle shots and make sure they match.
Thanks to the new Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory, the Hero 12 Black can also record in 4K/60fps with a 177-degree field of view. The larger lens means you can benefit from a 36 percent larger field of view for widescreen video and a 48 percent larger field of view for portrait video – although you’ll need to buy the lens separately if you want to use it.
The GoPro Hero 12 Black costs $399.99 and will be available for pre-order starting Wednesday. The Max Lens Mod 2.0 will also be available on Wednesday and will cost $99.99 (or $79.99 if you’re a GoPro subscriber). The cameras will be available in stores from September 13 GoPro is also launching a $599.99 “Creator Edition” that comes with a grip and a “media editing” attachment along with microphone and LED light accessories.
Good news for GoPro customers is that GoPro is also updating the GoPro Quik app. The app now lets you edit your videos directly from the cloud. No need to download videos locally to your device anymore.
