Google is increasing the Pixel 8a’s charging speed, which raises hopes.
If mid-range smartphones are on par with more expensive models, that’s often enough of an indication that next-generation flagships will also be a step up. There are good signs for the Pixel 9 series, as the Pixel 8a will get faster charging and offer more than its predecessor.
27 watts isn’t exactly peak power, but it’s more than the Pixel 7a’s 18 watts. So we’re hopeful that Google will eventually significantly improve fast charging for the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. I wouldn’t expect a triple-digit number, but 45 to 50 watts would be a good thing and a long wait.
Along with Samsung and Apple, Google is one of the most cautious smartphone brands when it comes to fast charging of phones. There has been essentially no progress here in recent years, although competition, primarily from China, has quickly reached peak performance of 100 watts.
Talking about fast charging at less than 30 watts, which Google phones currently offer even in the price range of more than 1,000 euros, is almost a bit gimmicky.
