Introduction
The HP Envy 16-inch laptop is designed for on-the-go productivity. Kit out with a powerful processor and GPU, this laptop should be able to easily handle intense tasks like 3D rendering and 4K video editing.
The MacBook Pro 16-inch, which is currently our proposed laptop for creative work, had the opportunity to briefly test the device before its full release at a press event to measure its potential.
It is important to remember that this article is only a hands-on, so I will only cover machine design and specs, not performance or battery life. When we get the final model for a full review we will dive deeper into its performance.
Price and release date
The HP Envy 16-inch starts at 1399.99 and is expected to be available for purchase in May. We will update this article once the UK and European pricing as well as more specific release dates are confirmed.
Design and screen
- 16-inch display
- 88.7% screen-to-body ratio
- Smooth and simple design
- Natural Silver comes
The HP Envy 16-inch looks a lot like the HP Envy 17-inch, slightly smaller. It comes in a color, Natural Silver, and it has a smooth and simple design that is attractive. I would welcome more choices for color options like the Acer Spin 5, but the 88.7% screen-to-body ratio and streamlined design give it professional quality, if not a little general look.
I didn’t type much into the Envy 16, but in my short time with it, the keyboard here felt solid and durable. However, the laptop weighs a lot at 2.3 kg, which can make it a bit heavy to use as a portable device. This will be somewhat disappointing news for those who are currently working on hybrids.
There are three variants of the display on offer, though all are 16 inches in size. There is a 3840 x 2400 resolution OLED option, or two WQXGA models that come with 2560 x 1600 resolution. Unlike the OLED model, the next two come with a 120Hz refresh rate, but all three options limit 400 nit brightness and provide 100% sRGB gamut coverage, according to HP. I didn’t have a colormeter at the event to confirm these quotes, but we’ll be able to do that in our full review. Still, the screen looked bright and crisp and I welcome its generous proportions, as it was easy to read multiple tabs at once.
The Envy 16 offers a good selection of ports, including two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, DisplayPort 1.4, two SuperSpeed USB Type-A, HDMI 2.1, an SD card reader and a 3.5mm audio jack. This makes this laptop an ideal choice for anyone who often has to transfer a lot of data; In particular, I appreciate the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4, as it is invaluable for creative people who need to change a lot of video content. Thunderbolt is a USB standard that allows for faster data transfer speeds with devices such as external SSDs.
Performance
- 12th-Gen Intel Core Processor
- Nvidia GeForce or Intel GPU
- 32 / 16GB RAM
- Storage up to 2TB
As mentioned, I wasn’t able to test the full capacity of the HP Envy 16-inch, so I’m just going through the glasses on offer in contrast to the performance. The CPU has three tastes:
- 12th generation Intel Core i9-12900H
- 12th generation Intel Core i7-12700H
- 12th generation Intel Core i5-12500H
You’ll also find a choice of Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 laptop GPU, Intel Arc A370M graphics or Intel Iris Xe graphics, whichever is more powerful. Depending on the internal integration, the Envy 16 can prove to be very powerful, in fact, the 12th-Gen processor is able to provide smooth performance and fast load-up time. Choosing an Nvidia GPU should allow users to engage in more intensive graphics work, such as Adobe Photoshop or video editing.
This laptop is capable of storing up to 2TB on a single SSD with M.2 SSD expansion capability. You have a choice of 32GB or 16GB of RAM, which should be enough for productivity workers and even creatives.
In terms of battery, HP says that the Envy 16 can reach 50% charge in 30 minutes thanks to the fast charge, battery life up to 9 hours 45 minutes during regular mixed use. It packs an 83Wh battery and either a 150W or 200W smart AC power adapter. I didn’t get a chance to run any battery tests during my preview; But, if true, these figures are impressive for a device with such specs.
First impression
I didn’t spend much time with the HP Envy 16-inch, but I liked what I saw. The large screen makes it easy to fit multiple tabs across the screen – ideal for productivity – and the screen itself looks bright and vibrant, which would be great for media viewing.
The large size and weight may discourage the use of this device as a hybrid working laptop, although I would recommend that anyone considering a powerful device for content creation or productivity consider their HP Envy 16-inch.
