But somehow I can’t quite trust the survey numbers…
It’s our constant companion, our window to the world, our digital Swiss Army knife: the smartphone. Hardly any other technological device has influenced and changed our daily lives in recent years as much as this simple little technological marvel. But how long do we actually allow ourselves to be taken by our smartphones every day? A current survey by digital association Bitcom provides insightful results.
“Smartphones are an essential companion for many people,” said Dr. Sebastian Klose, Head of Consumer Technology at Bitcom. “Whether for information, entertainment or communication with friends and family: smartphones help us stay connected to the world and support us in many situations.”
Germans spend an average of 2.5 hours a day on their smartphones. For those under 30, the duration of use is even significantly longer. The younger they are, the more they use their cell phones:
- 16-29 years: 182 minutes
- 30-49 years: 158 minutes
- 50-64 years: 148 minutes
- 65+ years: 96 minutes
Not surprisingly, only a fraction of smartphone time is spent doing what cell phones were originally designed for: making phone calls. On average, we apparently make 29 minutes of phone calls per day on our smartphones — which, frankly, seems like a lot to me, even though I’m not particularly phone-shy (and this applies here: the shorter, the more phone calls, according to Bitcom).
Of course, the bulk of usage still comes from messaging, social media, games and entertainment. Smartphones are no longer just a means of communication, but a versatile digital companion, as the survey once again shows.
But as practical and entertaining as smartphones can be, they also harbor dangers. More than half of those surveyed admitted they’d lost track of many friendships without the device. And an overwhelming majority of 83 percent can no longer imagine life without a smartphone. Do you see the results yourself?
