Ilford has returned with a new-and-improved product after a challenging year. The photographic supply company, known for its black-and-white films and papers, was forced to halt manufacturing in April 2020 due to COVID concerns. Consequently, prices increased by up to 15% two separate times in the following months. Now they’ve returned with a premium version of their resin coated (RC) papers, MULTIGRADE RC PORTFOLIO darkroom paper.
According to Iford, its latest product line combines all of the best aspects from different papers. A double-weight base (225gsm) gives it the premium feel of fibre papers while the RC base allows for quick and flat drying. ‘These new papers have a slightly warmer base tint and image colour than their predecessor as well as better, deeper blacks, improved mid-grade spacing for easier printing and more consistent contrast throughout the tonal range,’ reads their press release.
Currently, the paper is available in pearl finish. Other variations are expected throughout the year. The following sizes are available:
- 10 x 15cm (4 x 6″)
- 12.7 x 17.8cm (5 x 7″)
- 17.8 x 24 cm (7 x 9.5″)
- 20.3 x 25.4cm (8 x 10″)
- 24 x 30.5cm (9.5 x 12″)
- 30.5 x 40.6cm (12 x 16″)
- 40.6 x 50.8cm (16 x 20″)
The 10x15cm (4×6”) size will no longer feature a postcard printed back product. Ilford has provided a template in their press release for customers to use.
Developing times for MULTIGRADE RC PORTFOLIO darkroom paper are also available on the product page.
Ilford encourages students and professionals alike to use its new premium paper, especially for ‘extra special’ prints. Those wanting to brush up on skills, or are new to printing, can access a variety of free resources from Ilford’s Learning Zone.
