A thermometer on a smartphone is how Google gets attention. Practical or useless, what do you think?
We still have a lot of question marks in our minds as to why Google had to put a thermometer in the Pixel 8 Pro. But we accept it and will be happy to inform you about our preliminary experience and the most important original data about this material. Because it is not only limited to body temperature.
Google promise, that the Pixel 8 Pro’s thermometer can also “measure the surface temperature of everyday objects.” So it can be of practical help in daily life. Food, beverage, cast iron, ceramic, glass, metal, plastic, rubber and other surfaces are supported.
The thermometer needs to be within a few centimeters of the object in question to measure the temperature. A range from -20° to 150° is supported. But of course there is some danger to the surrounding technology if an object in particular gets very hot and the smartphone gets too close to this heat source.
However, there is a (theoretical) limitation: Google has not yet approved that the thermometer can also be used to officially determine body temperature. Of course it is technically sound and it is only a matter of time, but the health authorities have to play along.
Curious hardware features are no longer surprising at Google
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pixel 9 Pro no longer has this feature. There is criticism that this additional sensor definitely affects the price of the device. Google could save itself this addition, for which there was really no demand. However, this is not the first strange decision, for example the use of a radar sensor in the Pixel 4 for only one generation.
