John McAfee, cybersecurity pioneer and founder of McAfee Security, has been indicted on charges of tax evasion and willing failure to file tax returns. The indictments were unsealed following McAfee’s arrest in Spain, where he is awaiting extradition.
According to the indictment, McAfee failed to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018 despite receiving income from promoting cryptocurrencies, consulting work, speaking engagements, and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary. During that time, he is alleged to have received millions while hiding the income through having payments be made to bank and cryptocurrency accounts in the names of designees, as well as through asset purchases made in the names of other individuals.
If found guilty, McAfee could be sentenced to five years in federal prison for each count, plus supervised release, monetary penalties, and restitution.
