In 1998, Martin Scorsese gave us The Last Temptation of Christ, A film about the life of Jesus Christ, starring William Dafoe as the religious figure. Now, it seems the famous film director still has a lot to say about Jesus, since His next film again revolved around him.
In an interview with the LA Times Scorsese revealed that he is currently working on a film script focusing on Jesus and his teachings., which will go into production later this year, or so he hopes. What the director has to say about this:
“Right now, ‘religion’, you say the word and everyone is up in arms because it has failed in so many ways. But that doesn’t mean the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s go. Let’s think about it. You can reject it. But even denying it, it can make a difference in how you live your life. Just don’t dismiss it. That’s all I’m talking about. And I say this as someone who will be 81 years old in a few days. You know what I’m saying?”
This new movie is inspired by the book The Life of JesusWritten by Shusaku Endo, a famous Japanese writer. This new film will mainly be set in the present day. The director expects the film to be around 80 minutes long and focus on the core teachings of Jesus in a way that explores principles but does not proselytize.
In his interview, Scorsese mentioned that after the premiere Killers of Flower Moon In Cannes in May 2023, he traveled to Italy with his wife Helen Morris, To attend the conference on Global Aesthetics of the Catholic Imagination. Later, he met briefly with Pope Francis and later revealed:
“I responded to the Pope’s call to artists the best way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.”
