Masayasu Ito is a mechanical engineer, graduated from Waseda University, who started his career at Sony in 1986. In his early years he was lead hardware engineer for the LCD screen of the PSOne, some peripherals for the PS2, mechanical engineering for the PSP, and the PS3. In 2008, he assumed the position of Vice President of Hardware Engineering at SCEI, where he oversaw the architecture of PlayStation 4, PlayStation VR, PS4 Pro and most recently PS5.
About his successor, Lin Tao will take over from Ito as director of hardware engineering and operations in Japan.. For his part, Hideaki Nishino, who took over as senior vice president in March 2021, will be responsible for the new PlayStation platform.
