The Matthews 3iSPresser A new spreader designed for use with the Ronford-Baker and O’Connor tubular metal tripods. It was created by working camera professionals to offer a safe, smooth, well-balanced, and ultra-durable solution.
3i Mark Irwin was invented out of necessity by ASC / CSC, Matt Irwin and Ray Irwin. In addition to Irwin, several handpicked rental homes in Canada, Puerto Rico, and the United States have placed 3i through years of actual production field testing in the most diverse terrain, from city streets to sandy waves to primitive hardwood floors. After being used successfully in numerous productions, they came up with the idea in Matthews Studio Equipment.
The 3i system solves three common, annoying and potentially dangerous problems. First, it eliminates scratching and shaking which is a common side effect of old-fashioned aluminum spreaders resting on the floor. Second, it eliminates the need for bungee cords that are unstable, sloping and prone to stretch and detachment. Finally, it lifts the spreader off the floor, eliminating the need for scraps and layout boards and position mats for position mats.
In a completely new design, three machined metal 3iSpuds with rubber caps are securely bolted to the spikes of the tripod. Once in place, the tripod rests on an inch-by-inch rubber cap on the floor.
The 3iSPresser connects the tripod foot with three quick-release pins, eliminating stretch-out problems with older bungee cord attachments. The raised 3iS spreader creates a stable foundation based on rubberized feet.
For uneven terrain or to accommodate different heights, the spreader segments adjust from close at 15 ″ / 38cm to fully extend up to 28 ″ / 71cm by increasing 2.5 ″ / 6.5 cm.
For transportation, the system folds, thanks to its center-pivot bracket puck design with a T-handle in the center. The legs and spreader (even extending to any combined length) bend and break together, allowing the spreader to hang between sticks, shipping tubes or carts.
The 3i weighs 8.5-lbs / 3.85kgis and is made of a combination of aluminum and steel components. Its inner legs, center pivot bracket (Pak), and 3iSpuds are made of aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum. All bolts, handles, outer legs and fittings are made of stainless steel, zinc plate, neoprene rubber or high impact plastic. All metals are coated with an elastomer thermoplastic polyurethane. It is also anti-reflective, easy to grip, scratch-resistant, non-corrosive and rust-resistant. So it is safe to use in fresh or salt water.
3iSPresser is available through Matthews dealers worldwide 1,099 USD.
