In the past, you’d consider changing the date on your console for Easter eggs like the final boss fight in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. But it’s 2023, roughly 2024, and now players are changing the time for a more serious reason: Mortal Kombat 1’s controversial microtransactions.
As you may already know, developer NetherRealm has started making skins from the release’s raid mode on its in-game store. It can be purchased using a premium currency called Dragon Crystals and includes outfits that were previously available for free in-game as part of the game’s seasonal updates.
But fans have discovered that by changing history on their PS5 console, they can literally go back in time and unlock these costumes again for free. It’s very likely that this bug will be fixed as we assume that publisher Warner Bros. wants to push players towards microtransactions and that most games with seasonal content like this feature use server-side clocks.
However, the battle between fans and financiers in Mortal Kombat 1 is stronger than ever, and many are still upset over the company’s decision to include Mortal Kombat in a full-priced game. Those who jump into the expensive Halloween ending will find a few extra moves to enjoy, but the warrior’s reputation is currently at an all-time low.
