A few years ago, Naughty Dog confirmed to us that it was working on an online game our end, which was originally going to be included in the franchise’s second game, but what happened with the project was disaster after disaster. With this information in mind, people thought that it was already hit with some kind of cancellation, and now with a statement, it seems they got certain details right.
In their message they made it clear that accepting it harmed them, but they had to stop developing it, since they didn’t have specific ideas that would fit with it, so in the end they didn’t want to continue, it also went that way. they are play station I wanted to drink them. So they had to decide whether they wanted to continue as a studio that develops dedicated experiences or, on the contrary, pursue only free-to-play projects that are supported by microtransactions and that lead to decisions.
We know many of you are anticipating news about the project we call The Last of Us Online. There’s no easy way to say it: we made the incredibly difficult decision to stop development on that game.
We know this news will be difficult for many, especially our dedicated The Last of Us Factions community, who have been following our multiplayer ambitions wholeheartedly. We’re equally impressed with the studio as we can’t wait to get your hands on it. I wanted to share with you some background on how we came to this decision.
The multiplayer team has been in pre-production on this game since we were working on The Last of Us Part II: creating an experience that we felt was unique and had tremendous potential. As the multiplayer team iterated on their concept for The Last of Us Online this time around, their vision crystallized, the gameplay became more refined and satisfying, and we were excited about the direction we were headed.
As we reached full production, the sheer scope of our ambitions became clear. In order to publish and support The Last of Us Online, we will need to dedicate all of our studio resources for the next few years to supporting post-production content, which will severely impact the development of single-player games in the future. So, we had two paths ahead of us: become a fully live-service game studio or continue to focus on the single-player narrative games that have defined the Naughty Dog tradition.
We are extremely proud of all the studio members who participated in this project. The learnings and technology investments from this game will reflect how we develop our projects and will be invaluable in the direction we are headed as a studio. We have several ambitious new single-player games we’re working on here at Naughty Dog, and we’re excited to share more about what’s next when we’re ready.

Editor’s note: It was imminent, since the roguelike mode of the new version of Part II seemed suspicious, and I bet that these assets were going to be used for multiplayer, so they just removed them and then they will prepare for the distribution of this release.
