Sony has announced its FX6 camera has been added to the Netflix Approved Camera List, meaning Netflix Originals can be recorded on using the $6,000 cinema camera.
In order to achieve certification from Netflix, cameras must meet minimum resolution and capture specifications, as well as other ‘attributes like dynamic range, form factor, stability and workflow compatibility were also taken into consideration,’ according to Sony.
According to Netflix’s Camera Production Guide for the Sony FX6, footage should be shot in Cine EI mode with S-Gamut3/SLog3 color gamut using the XAVC-I codec with the option to shoot 4096 x 2160p (DCI 4K) or 3840 x 2160p (UHD) with the base ISO set to ISO 800 or ISO 12800.

While this isn’t huge news for your average photographer or cinematographer, it’s worth noting the FX6 is effectively a cine version of the a7S III that features more production-level inputs, outputs and adjustments. This effectively means the core components that are approved for shooting Netflix Originals are also inside the much smaller — and more affordable — a7S III.
This particular comparison is also seen in the Panasonic BGH1, which was also recently certified by Netflix and is effectively a more cinema-oriented version of the GH5s.
