The introduction of new motherboard generations for AMD and Intel processors is expected in the third quarter of 2024. Both manufacturers plan to update their current platforms with expanded features and higher performance.
The third quarter of 2024 could be exciting for PC enthusiasts and system builders. Both AMD and Intel are reportedly planning to launch new generation motherboards. While AMD is keeping the AM5 socket, Intel is pushing it further LGA1851. LGA1700’s DDR4 support may be omitted.
Intel’s upcoming 800 series chipsets with the LGA1851 socket are expected to launch for Arrow Lake processors. The range includes chipsets such as the Z890, H860 and H810 as well as the W880/Q870 chipsets for workstation and business applications. The Z890 platform should have special features Up to 60 high-speed IO channels and native support for DDR5-6400 memory. is among other things Four additional PCIe 5 lanes speech. Features like WiFi 7 and 5 Gbit/s Ethernet are also highlighted
A little new to AMD 700 motherboards?
On the other hand, AMD is planning its expansion 700 chipset for AM5 To introduce. They are expected to launch alongside AMD Ryzen 8000 “Granite Ridge” processors, which use the Zen 5 core architecture. Due to the unchanged socket, the processors should be compatible with older chipsets via BIOS updates for existing motherboards. Particular attention will be paid to whether AMD will retain the previous dual PCH design (X670 = two B650 chipsets) or switch to a single PCH for high-end 700 AM5 motherboards. Wi-Fi 7 is also expected here.
It will also be interesting to see how different the two manufacturers are in their strategies. While Intel is planning a socket change and several upgrades with its new platform, AMD seems to be taking a more flexible approach. AMD could potentially introduce the Ryzen 8000 series first on 600 series motherboards and only later offer the 700 series for additional functions. It remains to be seen how much the new chipset and functions will affect the already rising motherboard prices.
