AI photo editing is an exciting field with many possibilities, but also some challenges.
Even before the widespread introduction of AI functions, the camera software of our smartphones had a significant impact on the end result. We certainly all remember the fake moon that was supposedly produced by smartphones that were advertised as a special moon zoom.
With the Galaxy S24, Samsung has launched a new phone that offers a lot of AI photo editing. Generative AI makes it possible to transform photos in impressive ways: objects can be removed, added or rearranged. Even the background can be changed. But the seamless integration of AI raises the question: Are photos edited with AI still “real”?
In an interview with Dr TechRadar Patrick Chomet, Samsung’s head of customer experience, defended the new function. He argues that there is no such thing as a “real” image. As soon as the sensor is used to capture an image, reality is already reproduced and interpreted.
One objective is to capture the moment – to create an image that is as accurate and complete as possible. To do this, we use numerous AI filters, transitions and optimizations to remove shadows, reflections, etc. But we stay true to the user’s intent to capture that moment.
Galaxy AI is intended to target different user groups
Chomet also indicates different needs of users. Some just want to take beautiful pictures, while others value control over every detail. Generative AI can serve both groups by expanding creative opportunities. For example, Samsung is transparent; AI-edited photos have a corresponding watermark.
I myself see it quite simply. I have to love the film in the end. Whether this is primarily due to better hardware or software post-processing doesn’t really matter to me. Photographers will see it differently, but most smartphone users certainly agree with me.
