NVIDIA announced improvements to video streaming on Twitch powered by OBS
NVIDIA announced a major update focused on video streaming at CES 2024 in collaboration with Twitch. The upcoming Enhanced Streaming, launching in beta later this month, will use the NVIDIA NVENC encoder to improve the performance and quality of streaming video on GeForce RTX and GTX GPUs.
The main goal is to improve the viewer experience by improving video quality and reducing latency. This technology will be based on new standards and will take advantage of the advanced streaming capabilities of streaming devices and enable multi-encoded video streams. Additionally, AV1 coding is possible if possible.
NVIDIA’s collaboration with OBS, a major video streaming tool, aims to enable simultaneous streaming at up to three 1080p resolutions. Future plans include testing higher bitrates, moving to 4K resolution and supporting four simultaneous streams.
A notable addition is support for AV1, a royalty-free codec that requires less bandwidth for high-quality video but requires streaming devices to support encoding in this format. This should be less of a concern for viewers as GPUs, APUs, and even mobile SoCs continue to be updated with AV1 decoding. Additionally, the AV1 codec is not limited to NVIDIA hardware.

As he explained EposvoxAdvanced Streaming is based on the Advanced Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) specification. The converted video is sent to Twitch with all the parameters like encoder settings, resolution, bitrate and encoding parameters. Twitch will evaluate and verify these parameters with a focus on connection quality to ensure optimal settings. This makes streaming easier for content creators as complex settings are handled directly by Twitch instead of the user.
Currently, advanced streaming is not publicly available to all streamers. Only a select group of participants and those who sign up for the beta phase will have privileged access to this feature. Twitch plans to gradually integrate more YouTubers. Regardless, video streaming will benefit greatly from this technology. Once people start using it, the AV1 video codec is expected to become more popular.
