Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus and its sister company Oppo have announced a far-reaching partnership with Google Cloud. The goal is to use Google’s Gemini AI models to advance the development of AI-powered features in smartphones.
In the next three to five years, OnePlus and Oppo plan to introduce more than 100 new AI features. More than 10 million users of select devices, including the Oppo Find X7 series and OnePlus 12, can already experience the first generative AI features, maker BBK Mobile said in a statement. Joint press release.
Generative AI is an important milestone in the development of artificial intelligence. It brings greater creativity, innovation possibilities, improved technical scalability and significantly improved efficiency. These factors make us confident that we are entering a new era of AI phones. Our close collaboration with Google Cloud has been critical throughout our journey. Google Cloud’s open platform capabilities are critical to OPPO’s AI phone advancements.

Innovations include the Oppo AI Eraser, which makes it possible to remove objects from photos and seamlessly fill in the background. This tool will soon be available for other models like Reno 11 series, Find N3 and Find N3 Flip.
Oppo sees four key capabilities for AI phones: efficient computing, real-world perception, independent learning and creativity. These technologies are intended to give smartphones new possibilities for perception, interaction and intelligence and thus fundamentally change the mobile experience. As usual, it sounds like a lot of nonsense, especially when it comes to AI’s capabilities.
But I’m actually pretty sure that in three or five years we’ll be using smartphones significantly differently, especially in terms of natural language control.
Integration of Google’s cloud AI products will enable features such as summarization of news articles, real-time organization of audio content and creative creation of social media content.
While Oppo leverages its strengths in combining software, hardware, chipset and operating system to improve camera performance, OnePlus relies on AI optimization for ultimate performance.
