Google wants to eliminate the need for passwords by requiring users to create passkeys to unlock accounts and devices using a fingerprint, facial scan or PIN.

Passkeys are now used as password replacements for apps like YouTube, Search, Maps, Uber, and eBay. According to the blog, WhatsApp is also adding this feature.
The FIDO Alliance, a security consortium that includes several technology companies as members, has already developed standards for passkeys. Since then Microsoft, Apple and Google have been working to make passkeys a reality.
Apple introduced its own Passkey option with the release of iOS 16, which allows the technology to be used across all apps, including Apple Wallet. Passkey support first launched on Chrome and Android devices in October 2022.
