Hedge is a popular solution for transferring and organizing your valuable footage and creating checksum-verified backups (read the article here). But that’s not all: Hedge has released three updates to its suite equipment: Hedge MaterialEditReady RAW, and Canister Spanning.
According to Hedge, these recent updates address common issues such as working with unorganized media that requires custom-created metadata fields, RAW transcoding, and ensuring that individual media archives can be spread across multiple LTO tapes.

Hedge material
Material The term hedge refers to the varied and customizable metadata that users can now attach (and keep) to a file so that the role of that file can be made clear to other creative and technical professionals in the subsequent workflow.
Keeping track of files is very important: Knowing what they are for, where they come from and why they are important is an important part of a modern video workflow. According to Hedge, the term “metadata” is not consistently defined across roles and categories. For a camera operator, metadata means camera, reel number and lens data. An editor refers views / numbers as metadata. A colorist needs information about the color space used … the list goes on.
So to ensure that video files always contain accurate information, a specific workflow has been created to suit specific needs, Hedge said. Material.
Most importantly, those who receive files can now specify what data elements are needed to organize and process those files. They do this by creating a preset that they send to hedge operators during data transfer. In addition to transferring data from hedge camera cards and other storage sources, a “review” panel will pop up asking the operator to enter the required data.

EditReady RAW
Hedge’s other tool is called EditReady, and it has been taking care of video transcoding for an amazing 14 years … and with the latest update it is now ready to process RAW files as well. These include ARRI RAW, Codex HDE, ProRes RAW and RED R3D, as well as formats like Blackmagic RAW. The latest version, the first new version of EditReady since it became part of Hedge, quickly solved the problem of converting RAW footage to editable formats (according to Hedge, Sony and Canon RAW formats are “on the way”).
EditReady does this by converting camera RAW footage to a log format from the camera maker. Once done, you can easily edit exported files using your favorite NLE without having to worry about RAW support.
Canister spanning
Canister is an easy-to-use, drag-and-drop interface and catalog for LTO backups. With this new update, it now supports Spanning – Ability to span file transfers across multiple LTO tapes. LTO is an advanced storage technology that is scalable to hold large amounts of data. It (still) is used by many production companies and post-production facilities to store valuable footage.
In general, LTO users need to carefully evaluate whether their archive material will fit with a separate tape. Canister solves this by automatically allocating files to multiple tapes. Canister asks users to insert a new LTO tape as needed and keeps a catalog of tapes and files so that when the component needs to be restored, the user can insert the LTO tapes needed to restore the archive.
Also in new releases: Preflight check. It can be difficult for LTO users to keep up with OS, interconnect and firmware revisions. Preflight checks help ensure that everything is set up and fully functional.
After all, this release seeks to ensure a hassle-free LTO backup experience without worrying about all the technical complications that come with it.
Pricing
Hedge costs $ 139 for a permanent license with one year upgrade, $ 69 for another year with a renewal. That way, you can upgrade to the latest version (but don’t have to) and get the latest features.
