The new Qi2 charging standard will be introduced to Samsung Galaxy smartphones this year. It was announced by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) at CES 2025. Even more Android phones will follow.
Qi2 promises more efficient and faster wireless charging. So far only HMD Skyline smartphones support the new standard, even with the magnetic holder, which is perhaps the most important feature of the new generation.
Samsung itself has confirmed Qi2 integration in its Galaxy devices. Exactly which models these are are not yet clear According to rumours, the Galaxy S25 will support Qi2 at least in special cases. However, the WPC announcement suggests that the technology will be integrated directly into the devices.
Google also apparently wants to use Qi2 in future Pixel smartphones. The group is playing a key role in the development of Qi2 and advancing the standard’s integration into the Android ecosystem. Google even wants to bring its own fast charging technology to the upcoming Qi2.2 standard.
Until now, the fast charging functions of Pixel smartphones were based on Qi2, but additional technology was used that increased the charging speed to more than the usual 15 watts. However, this function was previously limited to Pixel Stand. By integrating into the Qi standard, more smartphones and chargers could benefit in the future.
With “Qi2 Ready”, WPC intends to expand the standard to include cases and other accessories. This certification makes it possible to use the advantages of Qi2 even if the standard is not integrated directly into the device.
It’s good to see that there is finally more happening in this area. As a Pixel fan, I hope that Google integrates Qi2 with a magnetic ring in the Pixel 10 at the latest and thus finally matches the iPhone.
In case you don’t know, MagSafe, the magnetic ring idea, was actually proposed by Apple for the Qi standard.
