Rockstar has hired the team behind the popular multiplayer modes for GTA 5 FiveM and RDR2 RedM, Cfx.re – the same team who were banned from playing the game in 2015.
The studio announced the news on the company’s website and social media channels, saying it was “proud” to welcome the team to Rockstar Games.
The news is particularly surprising given that modders were banned from the game in 2015. Despite Rockstar’s efforts to comply with the rules – which said that changing the developer’s official GTA Online mode would result in a Panhammer problem – and keeping their multiplayer service from GTA on the Web, Rockstar banned them anyway.
“FiveM Project is an alternative, unauthorized multiplayer service that contains code intended to facilitate hacking,” Rockstar said at the time. “Our policy regarding such violations of our Terms of Service is clear and the Social Club accounts of those involved in creating these violations have been suspended.”
Now, however, Rockstar has relaxed its rules on role-playing mods and is welcoming mods
“Today we are proud to announce that Cfx.re – the team behind Rockstar’s largest role-playing and creator communities FiveM and RedM – is now officially part of Rockstar Games,” the team said in a statement.
Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as the Rockstar creative community found new ways to expand the capabilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, most notably by creating dedicated RPG servers. To support this effort, we’ve recently expanded our mod policy to formally include those created by the role-playing creative community.”
“By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this amazing community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players. We look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks and months,” the statement said.
Dan Houser, co-founder and creative director of Rockstar Games, which split from the Grand Theft Auto developer in 2020, recently launched Absurd Ventures, a media company formed to develop a new IP for “all platforms and formats.”
