Samsung is replacing a camera on the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the details have now been confirmed.
There were earlier inconsistencies about the camera details of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, but just weeks before its market launch (on January 17, 2024), important details have now been clarified. Samsung is apparently ditching the camera for 10x zoom and using a periscope for 5x zoom instead.
Interestingly, Samsung still advertises 10x zoom, but 50 percent of that is achieved through software. The basis of this zoom is a camera that offers 5x optical zoom, but the image sensor on the back will increase from 10 to 50 MP. Image quality will take a noticeable leap.
It’s not clear in the spec sheet which of the zoom levels is optical:
In the photos (X article below), compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra, you can see that the periscope of the Galaxy S24 Ultra is much smaller or shorter. A confirmation of said changes. Samsung seems confident that the loss of optical 10x zoom can easily be made up for with AI enhancements.
And if we’re honest, the 10x zoom of the last Ultra models was nice, but it’s hardly used in everyday life. I find the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s new zoom cover with 3x and 5x zoom telephoto lenses more exciting for everyday use with smartphone cameras.
