Samsung finally introduced the new SSD 990 Pro at Gamescom. But the M.2 SSD is not connected via PCIe 5.0, as previously announced by various leaks.
There have been numerous leaks about the next Samsung SSD, just last week VideoCardz reported that the Samsung 990 Pro had been leaked by South Korean authorities. Listed as a PCIe 5.0 x4 compliant SSD So the announcement of a Samsung SSD 990 Pro is even more surprising With PCIe Gen 4.
But the latest model should achieve at least one of the fastest speeds, if not the fastest, currently possible with PCIe 4.0. Up to 7,450MB/s Sequential read and 6,900 MB/s sequential write speeds should be achieved. For comparison: the predecessor model SSD 980 Pro was introduced in 2020 as one of the first PCIe 4.0 models and was advertised with read speeds of up to 7,000 MB/s. The Samsung 990 Pro specifies random read and write speeds of 1,400K and 1,550K IOPS, respectively.
Samsung has also redesigned the SSD 990 Pro’s controller. It is compared to its predecessor 50 percent improved energy efficiency offer. The controller has a nickel coating, a heat spreader and dynamic thermal guard technology. A model with a heat sink is said to be in the planning stages, as well as a model with a capacity of 4 terabytes. However, the Samsung NVMe SSD 990 Pro will initially be available for pre-sale from October 2022 with 1 TB for 174.90 EUR and 2 TB for 324.90 EUR.
