Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event is just around the corner and fans of the South Korean manufacturer around the world are eagerly awaiting the new foldable smartphone, tablet and smartwatch. The focus of the event in Seoul was the design of the devices, which was addressed by TM Roh, Head of Samsung MX and Corporate Design Center. A press release as previously published.
“Inspired by People, Creating the Future”
The vision that Samsung has been following since 1996 is also reflected in the upcoming products: “Inspired by people, create the future” is the motto.
According to Roh and his team, it’s important that users focus on experience rather than mere achievement, and on meaningful connections rather than pure technological prowess. From this, Samsung distilled three design identities that always focus on the user:
Essential, innovative, harmonious
These three keywords are at the heart of the design philosophy of new products including Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Tab S9 series and Galaxy Watch 6. A ‘essential’ design focuses on clarity and everyday usability, while an ‘innovative’ design reflects a new originality, uniqueness and purpose. A “coherent” design ensures that all elements work together and reflect social, environmental and ethical values.
Future oriented design
According to Roh, the new foldable smartphones will be more ergonomic, thinner and lighter than before. At the same time, he emphasizes that crafting thin devices requires craftsmanship and that the benefits for users when done well are immense. Also, users should be able to express more of their personality with the new Galaxy Foldable.
Sustainability in focus
Durability plays a major role in the development of new devices. For Samsung, “creating the future” includes the responsibility to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. It will be interesting to see what details Samsung will announce at the event. Even if neither device is particularly interesting to me personally, I look forward to the Unpacked event with some excitement (and I’m especially happy when we’ve successfully got this leak cycle behind us).
