Samyang Optics has just introduced a new member of the VDSLR MK2 line of affordable cine primes: Introducing the Samyang VDSLR 14mm T3.1 MK2. This is the fifth lens in the new MK2 lineup.
This lens is a bit slower than the other four available members of the MK2 line, which is understandable considering it is a 14mm ultra-wide angle lens. The older MK1 version was also T3.1, but Samyang claims that the MK2 versions have been revised in terms of weather sealing and overall build quality.
Samyang VDSLR 14mm T3.1 MK2 cine prime
The new 14mm T3.1 MK2 lens sports 14 Elements in 10 Groups. The minimum focusing distance is 0.28m (0.92 ft) and the iris, just like the other lenses, consists of 9 blades (MK1: 8 blades). The lens covers full frame sensors (24 x 36 mm) and you’ll get a 115.7° angle of view when using this lens on a full frame sensor (98.4° on super35).
The focusing angle is 139°, so it is obvious that the heritage of this lens is in the field of photographic lenses. You can’t attach any filters to the front of the Samyang VDSLR 14mm T3.1 MK2 since there is no filter thread. Furthermore, you can’t detach the lens hood at all. The RF version offers a rear filter holder.
The iris and focus rings are de-clicked and geared, and there are markings on both sides of the lens. The size of tha lens ranges from 87.0 x 93.6 mm (Nikon F) up to 87.0 x 123.4 mm (FUJI X) and weights about 700g (depending on the mount). Speaking of mounts, these Samyang lenses are available in a variety of mounts: Canon EF & RF & M, Sony E, Nikon F, FUJI X and MFT.
Pricing and availability
This new 14mm T3.1 MK2 lens should be available soon, you can read all about it over on Samyangs website here. Pricing is still to be announced but for reference you can get the older version for $399. The newer MK2 versions are a bit more expensive, I think due to the better weather sealing and upgraded iris. The already available MK2 lenses range from $449 (85mm T1.5 MK2) to $749 (24mm T1.5 MK2).
