Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 DG DN | Announced C, a fast wide-angle zoom for full-frame that makes it part of the company’s more affordable ‘contemporary’ range.
The lens is a new design for mirrorless cameras and will be available for L and E mounts. It uses a stepping motor and internal focus design to give fast, quiet focus. It is designed to work well for both still and video.
It is a relatively small, light design for a wide-angle zoom: 101mm (4.0 “) long and 77mm (3.0”) in diameter and weighs 450g (15.9oz). This, combined with its interior zoom design, means that it should be easy to balance for use on gimbals. The lens has a 72mm front filter thread, which allows easy use of circular polarizers and ND filters.
The design consists of 16 components in 11 groups, including 5 FLD (fluorite-like) and 4 aspherical lens components. It is capable of focusing up to 25 cm (9.9 “), giving a maximum reproduction ratio of 1: 5.6. It has nine rounded aperture blades that help the lens continue to provide a round bokeh.
Although this lens makes the most sense on a full-frame sensor, it can also be used as the 24-42mm F4.2 equivalent in the APS-C body. Sigma highlights that it works well with the company’s existing 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN. C To provide full-frame shooters with ultra-wide to short telephoto coverage on two wide-aperture lenses that together weigh 920g (2lbs).

Two large-diameter aspherical lens components and five ideally arranged FLD glass components (whose properties reflect fluorite) keep the lens light and compact and effectively suppress lateral and vertical chromatic aberrations that often characterize other ultra-wide lens images. The design lens also uses the advanced digital correction capabilities of modern cameras to enable it to achieve such impressive image quality from such a small body.
