Syntel announced the launch of its 5G SA network in the country in May 2021
Singapore carrier Syntel has been selected by US company Micron Technology to deploy a 5G millimeter wave solution with a local edge core at the semiconductor maker’s 3D NAND flash memory plant in Singapore.
Singtel noted that Micron is the first company in Singapore to pilot 5G by deploying a mmWave campus solution with Edge Core on-premises for Industry 4.0 manufacturing applications.
5G solutions will be installed in Micron’s cleanroom to assist in the development of a variety of digitally enabled applications, including automatic visual inspection of chips and augmented reality (AR) for operation and maintenance.
“This industry-first installation demonstrates that 5G networks can be used for high-precision quality control and manufacturing activities, which was not possible before with the limitations of Wi-Fi. In addition, the implementation is a significant milestone in Singtel’s journey to accelerate Enterprise 5G adoption and will serve as a case study to inspire other 5G-enabled manufacturing sites around the world, “said Bill Chang, CEO of Singtel’s Group Enterprise.
With a 5G on-premise edge core, Micron will be able to use smaller and lighter loT devices that require less computing power for cleanroom operation. In addition, Singtel’s Paragon will be used to analyze the performance of devices and networks, an all-in-one platform for 5G networks, edge computing and service orchestration.
“Micron is a manufacturing powerhouse powered by a unique global network. The company is committed to leading the way in quality and on the edge of leveraging the benefits of smart solutions and AI. Together with Singtel, we aim to take performance to the next level using 5G technology. This will take us further as a trailblazer in the management excellence and scaled implementation of Industry 4.0 technology, “said Quinn de Becker, VP of Smart Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence Micron.
Singtel announced the launch of its 5G SA network in the country in May 2021 The carrier partnered with Korean company Samsung to launch a 5G SA network powered by 3.5 GHz spectrum.
Singtel initially launched its 5G non-standalone (NSA) network in September 2020, using the 3.5 GHz frequency as well as the existing 2.1 GHz spectrum.
The carrier says it is using the 3.5 GHz and 2.1 GHz bands as well as the 28 GHz mmWave spectrum to expand its 5G deployment in Singapore. Syntel has launched mmWave at various locations across the island, including Orchard Road, the Padang area and the Marina Bay Sands Expo.
In September last year, Swedish vendor Ericsson said it was powering Singtel’s 5G SA network with 5G radio access products and cloud-native, dual-mode 5G core network solutions. The European retailer said its product range would provide high-quality connectivity for outdoor coverage in densely populated areas and help drive strong indoor-mall coverage across city-states.
