Mega Crit has announced Slay the Spire 2, the sequel to the popular indie game that inspired a generation of digital deck designers.
Unveiled during the Triple-Eye Expo on Wednesday, Slay the Spire 2 was shown in a short trailer that confirmed the return of the Ironclad and Silent classes, as well as introducing a brand new character – the Necrobinder. The official description of the new character reads: “A wandering woman tries to bind a forgotten corpse. She calls to battle her trusty left hand, Osty.
In addition to the trailer, Mega Crit features several gameplay screens that are stylistically very similar to the previous game. Check them out below.
First released in 2019, Slay the Spire has garnered a huge fan base for its innovative mix of roguelike mechanics, turn-based combat, and map creation. In our original review we wrote: “[Slay the Spire] It encourages experimentation, gives you time to make mistakes, and presents you with great challenges as you go through fun, confusing battle after fun, surprising battle. The concept is so good that it inspired dozens of similar games before it even left Early Access, but it was so well executed that none of them matched it.
Notably, Mega Crit was among the developers who openly condemned Unity’s short-lived installation fee policy and threatened to switch to the new engine unless Unity’s changes were “completely reversed”. A Mega Crit representative confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 has now completely migrated from Unity and will instead use Godot – a free and cross-platform open source engine.
Slay the Spire 2 will enter Early Access sometime in 2025. All important game release dates for 2024 can be found here.
