The Sony a7 IV is the company’s latest mid-range full-frame mirrorless camera, while the a7R III is a four-year-old high-end, high-resolution model, so at first glance, they’re not the most obvious camera to compare.
However, Sony’s habit of keeping older models in its lineup means they are both still available. And, because the a7 IV is new, and still points to its full MSRP, where the a7R III is marked down to sit under the fourth ‘R’ model, it looks like they will be comparable in price, at least for the moment.
A refresh, in the form of the a7R IIIA (ILCE-7RM3A), gets a high-resolution rear display, which suggests Sony plans to keep it for a while longer, so we think it’s still understandable for us to try to fix it. Both of these cameras are good.
Given that most modern cameras are very good, this article will not simply declare one camera better than another. Instead we will try to point out the relative strengths and weaknesses so that you can work out which one is best for you and your photography.
