These are protective films for the yet to be announced smartphone models Xperia 1 VI and 10 VI from Sony pop up and provides information about the device’s camera hardware. Compared to previous models, film cutouts indicate larger camera modules and lenses
Especially with the flagship Xperia 1 VI, Sony seems to be relying on a large aperture in the camera module. The lens cutouts are significantly more generous than its predecessor, the Xperia 1 V. Larger camera modules and lenses promise improved light output and therefore potentially better image quality, especially in difficult lighting conditions.
But changes can also be expected in the mid-range model Xperia 10 VI, but not necessarily for the better: the protective film suggests a dual camera, while the Xperia 10 V still had three sensors.
I’m excited to see what Sony has in store for us this year. As the only manufacturer that makes smartphones as well as “real” cameras, expectations are particularly high for flagships, even if Sony plays an insignificant role in the overall Android smartphone market. After all, Sony has already proven in the past that the company is capable of developing innovative camera technology like the Xperia 1 IV’s variable telescopic zoom.
The leaked protective films aren’t proof of the new Xperia models’ actual camera hardware, but they are a strong indication that Sony intends to improve the camera department. This development has already become evident through leaks in the past few weeks.
More information will likely follow in the next few weeks, but unfortunately we don’t yet know an official date for performance. Based on previous generations, May seems like a reasonable time.
