Despite the decline in total TV viewing, streaming reached new heights in April – Nielsen
Another milestone was reached through streaming in April, when viewers spent more than 30% of their TV time watching video-over-the-top content. For the first time, streaming has exceeded 30% of all TV usage This increase in shares was supported by almost the same amount of streaming as in March, despite a 2.1% decline in total TV viewing. Depending on the season, this is a reflection of early spring use.
As we’re tracking, the growth of the streaming industry has welcomed an array of new entrants, each with a list of their own content offers. This increase is reflected in the growing engagement with the “other streaming” segment, which has gained two full share points since SME The Gage debuted in May 2021 with TV viewing data. Shares of HBO Max rose 1% in April. This is the threshold that allows for individual representation as shown in the chart below.
Although streaming volume was steady month-on-month, cable and broadcast saw their respective viewing figures drop by 3.3% and 2.5%, respectively. Broadcast viewers watched 14.7% less drama and 38.2% less play. A 16.9% decline in news viewing reflected a decline in cable TV viewing. However, there was a 17% increase in game viewing due to both the NCAA Basketball Championship and the NBA.

Procedures and Frequently Asked Questions
The Gage is a monthly analysis of consumers’ access to important TV delivery channels such as broadcast, streaming and cable. The chart also shows the breakdown of major streaming distributors. It shows both the percentage of total television usage by each streaming distributor and the department.
Gauge data is obtained from two weighted panels. Then they come together to create graphic. SME’s streaming data is taken from a subset of the streaming meter-capable TV family within the national TV panel. Linear TV sources (broadcast and cable), as well as total usage based on SME’s overall viewing from the TV panel.
Data is based on a specific viewing time. The data, representing the 5 week month, included a combination of Live + 7 for 1 – 4 weeks in the data period. Notice: Live +7 covers live viewing on television and viewing up to seven days later. You can watch up to 3 days after the broadcast, and live +3 is দেখা watching television
In The Gauge, “Other” includes all other TVs. This includes all other TVs including source tuning, streaming via cable set-top boxes, gaming and any other device (DVD player). Because streaming through set top boxes alone does not give credit to the respective streaming distributors, these are included in the “Other” category. We will continue to work SMEs to improve our streaming meter technology as well as to credit individual streaming distributors simply through set-top boxes.
Streaming platforms listed as “other streaming” include high-bandwidth video streaming on television that is not broken down individually.
Available for watching Hulu Live, as well as watching YouTube TV.
Echoed linear streaming, also known as encoded TV, can be found under the broadcast or cable group (linear TV), as well as streaming and other streaming categories such as Hulu TV, YouTube TV and other streaming MVPD / vMVPD apps. Note: MVPD (Multichannel Video Programming Distributor) is a service that provides multiple TV channels. Distributors who combine linear TV content from the main network into a single subscription package and make it accessible to all devices connected via broadband Internet are called vMVPDs.
