Not everything is the way Google would have liked. Not much has changed with the Tensor G4.
The first benchmark results are there and can probably be assigned to the new top model of the new Google phone Pixel 9 Pro XL. This makes it clear that the new Tensor G4 chipset will not be a major performance upgrade. The big jump comes with the Tensor G5, when Google replaces the entire base of the processor.
The new Tensor G4 doesn’t really offer much in the way of good benchmark results, but…
The Pixel 9 series has new processor cores with the new Tensor G4 and a different combination of them, but it probably won’t have a big impact on maximum performance. On the other hand, the new modem gives us hope for better reception and significantly lower battery consumption (up to 50 percent!).
Why tensors at all? According to an analysis by our colleagues Android Authority This is due to custom IP blocks. This allows Google to tailor the chipset perfectly to its own needs, and as is well known, the focus on Pixel is primarily on security, camera and AI as well as ML.
The new manufacturing package can bring better heat dissipation
Otherwise, it doesn’t seem like Google will be able to use a more advanced manufacturing package from Samsung that the Tensor G4 hasn’t used yet. It is said that the planned changes eventually no longer fit the schedule and the Tensor G4 did not turn out the way Google would have liked.
The new Tensor G5 on the Pixel 10 will shake things up
The Tensor G5 will probably arrive in 2025, which Google will fully adapt and Samsung will no longer be in production. Instead, TSMC will be the new partner, where manufacturing is at a different level. Qualcomm’s currently excellent Snapdragon 8 chipset is manufactured there and with success.
