Google has created one of the best Android phones for 2024 with the Pixel 8a.
That’s basically half the price of the Pixel 8 Pro, but technically it shouldn’t be that big of a difference to the current flagship. With the Pixel 8a, Google is delivering perhaps the best mid-range smartphone in its history. For the first time, it might be as exciting as the recent Pixel 4a.
Not because of the price, that’s for sure. Now we have already reached 549 euros. We’re 200 euros more expensive than the Pixel 4a. But it is relatively similarly applicable to smartphones from other manufacturers at least around the 500 euro mark. But what is there for Google?
Equivalent to the flagship model
The key difference is that the Pixel 8a, for example, has an update guarantee of more than seven years. Most competing smartphones in this price range last about half as long and don’t have regular updates like the Google Pixel – meaning a feature update every quarter.
From experience I can say that current software is definitely relevant for such a long time. Everyone in my family, especially the older generation, has been using smartphones for years and doesn’t constantly replace their devices. Current and compatible software is important in this regard.
Another important point in my opinion is the chipset, which is on par with the top models. Although Google does not rely on the most powerful production and the A model has less RAM, the 549 Euro and 1199 Euro smartphones are still the same. This means very similar features, for example when it comes to AI functions.
Another important issue in 2024 is the display, as a much brighter panel will be installed. The Pixel 8a can keep up with more expensive smartphones outdoors in the summer sun. It was really a joy during the first few days of my test, when it was particularly sunny. You can easily dim the display so it can still be used well in very dark environments.
Smears are well hidden
At Google, the camera’s image sensor was never particularly important, and it remains so. The built-in 64MP image sensor isn’t as big and powerful as the 50MP image sensor in flagships, but it still performs well enough to be called a “pixel camera”. I find that Google doesn’t see that much of a drop in price range, at least in general image quality. Of course, the details are a little different. I always come up with new pictures here.
Of course, I noticed here and there that my Pixel 8 Pro is faster overall, the display is brighter, and the camera’s image sensors are more powerful. But switching from my daily driver to a much cheaper smartphone was not that easy for me. After a few days, I still didn’t necessarily want to go back.
The latter is also due to the shape of the Pixel 8a, as it is quite compact and has very rounded screen corners. It flatters the hand with the original case and just sits comfortably in my palm. I quickly learned to love the new Google Phone. However, Google may improve the edge of the screen in 2025.
It’s no battery miracle, but you can get through the day just fine. Personally, it’s enough for me because I don’t play games, I mainly take photos, use the messenger app and do a little work. It doesn’t charge at 67 watts (or similar) like others in this price range, but it does incorporate wireless charging from the Pixel 7a.
Conclusion: Best solution for less money, but still a problem
Ultimately, if a harmonious package and a good camera are important to you, the Pixel 8a is the best solution in this price range. Google avoids the macro camera and other nonsense and focuses on the basics I love the Pixel experience of the software, nothing beats it for me.
But there is a problem. The Pixel 8a is on sale late, but the regular Pixel 8 is now available for around the same price (with good offers). The flagship offers a bit more, for example it can wirelessly charge other devices (headphones etc.), has better glass protection and the camera is better. This makes the purchase decision a little more difficult.
