AMD has confirmed that the Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPU family is now complete and no more SKUs are planned, although there may be an update.
AMD says there will no longer be Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPUs, but an update could be on the table
time to talk A preview of last night’s Radeon Gaming eventScott Herkelman (Senior Vice President, AMD) confirmed that its RDNA 3 portfolio, including the Radeon RX 7000 GPU, is now complete with the release of the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT GPUs. The new cards are aimed at the high-end gaming segment for $499-$449 and will launch on September 6th with a wide range of models.
With yesterday’s launch, there are now six graphics cards in the Radeon RX 7000 GPU family. This includes the flagship Radeon RX 7900. It’s worth noting that AMD has no competition in the $299-$399 segment, and that leaves a big gap since that’s typically the segment where most of the big players spend money.
In the same lineup, the RX 7900 competes with GB VRAM, and the RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 compete with the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060 Ti with 16/12 GB VRAM, and the RX 7600 RTX competes with 406GB VRAM. The RX 7900 GRE is a predominantly Chinese GPU with limited availability in the global market.
Here’s what AMD’s Scott Harkelman had to say:
Mays (moderator): You introduced the 7700 XT and 7800 XT Does this complete the RDNA3 portfolio or could there be more to come?
Scott: Well the RDNA3 portfolio is now complete. Of all the products we have planned to launch, we will be launching the last one. We may have some different versions, but this is not a new ASIC/SKU. […] It’s been a journey, it’s been almost a year since we released our first RDNA3 and now it’s been a year since we finished the series. We have to finish, we finished and we are excited. And now I think we have a wide range for people who want RDNA3 at high or low prices.
Scott noted that while the AMD RDNA 3 GPU lineup is complete and there will be no more SKUs, there may be future versions with similar specs and minor changes, but that mostly depends on market demand and competition. This could indicate an update similar to AMD’s Radeon RX 50XT series, which launched with RDNA 2 GPUs, offering higher clock speeds and faster TBP. There’s not a word on the navigation page, meaning the Navi 33 is the best AMD has to offer gamers. Reports of a possible launch of Navi 32 on mobile devices are a pipe dream at the moment.
This means AMD will eventually offer roughly half as many RDNA 3 family SKUs as the RDNA 2 line, including nine Radeon RX 6000 launches and three additional updated parts. AMD has no plans to launch an RTX 4090 competitor, but says it can’t and won’t come close to the high-end players in the laptop segment. According to the latest rumours, the GPU vendor is also unlikely to target the enthusiast segment with its RDNA 4 lineup next year.
AMD offers strong competition to NVIDIA with its RDNA 3 series and lags behind in ray tracing and efficiency for the most part. This can be tweaked with RDNA 4 and further enhanced with RDNA 5 GPUs, but NVIDIA doesn’t shy away from delivering a lot more performance and overall efficiency. For whatever it’s worth, it holds the crown of performance that matters for brain engagement. To all consumers.
