MediaTek has unveiled an addition to its line of premium 5G chipsets designed to help the company compete at the top end level Smartphone Market
At the top of the MediaTek portfolio is the new Dimension 9000+ SoC slot, with an Arm Mali-G710 GPU bundling eight CPU cores based on Arm’s v9 architecture.
As with previous models, the chipset has 8MB L3 cache, 6MB system cache, a high-performance modem, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and an integrated APU for AI acceleration.
Although the specs are largely identical to the Base Dimension 9000, the new SoC provides a component performance boost across graphical and traditional workloads, thanks to the ability to run the core at high clock speeds.
Historically, MediaTek has played a slightly less sexy part of the mobile chipset market, which includes budget and mid-range phones whose performance is not necessarily a priority for target users.
The launch of the Dimension 9000 in December last year signaled a change in strategy, which would see MediaTek try to muscle for the first time in flashship mobile devices, a field traditionally influenced by Qualcomm.
At MWC 2022, Techradar Pro Pascal Lemasson and Rob Moffat spoke to executives in charge of sales at MediaTek, who provided additional insights into the company’s new approach and the significance of its new dimension chips.
“The strategy is to offer our customers chipsets from the bottom up. Before Dimension 9000, we had a gap at the top end, “Moffat said.” Over the past three years, our R&D investment has expanded and 5G is a huge opportunity for us, so we decided to target the high-end market. “
“Ultimately, we need to focus on technology leadership, which automatically leads you to top-level products.”
The arrival of Dimension 9000+, meanwhile, has added another string to the MediaTek bow, perhaps giving OEMs a solid choice when choosing a configuration for their upcoming flagships.
“Based on the success of our first flagship 5G chipset, Dimension 9000+ ensures that device makers always have access to the most advanced high-performance features and the latest mobile technologies that make it possible to distinguish their top-tier smartphones, MediaTek’s Wireless Com Dr. Yenchi Lee says.
“With a suite of top-level AI, gaming, multimedia, imaging and connectivity features, Dimension 9000+ provides fast gameplay, seamless streaming and a better user experience everywhere.”
Smartphones based on MediaTek Dimensity 9000 + are set to hit the market in the third quarter.
