Google wanted to go back to a matte back for a long time, but it wasn’t until 2023 that everything was right again.
The matte back of the new Pixel 8 smartphone has been talked about a lot and we also liked it with the Pixel Fold. But in recent years, with the Pixel 6 and 7 having glossy glass backs, the devices slipped on basically every surface and didn’t have the best feel. A matte back switch seems permanent now.
Because, they explained in an interview with the designers, this is something that depends on many other factors. A designer at Google said that this seemingly minor redesign of the back is dependent on timing, supply chain logistics, technical requirements and technical specifications.
A matte back has been planned for a long time for Pixel smartphones
We haven’t been able to put everything together in recent years, and that’s why “we have to put our ideas on hold,” the Pixel designers said in an interview. So there may have been plans to put back a matte after the Pixel 5, but that didn’t work out for a variety of reasons. But in 2023 things looked better and everything worked out.
For the folks at Google, the benefits of the matte back are quickly summarized: it “gives devices a fine grip and a silky feel, and provides excellent protection against fingerprints”. I can at least say that the matte back really has a better feel, but it may not look as high-quality. Let’s see how powerful it is in everyday life.
The last matte Google smartphone with a glass back was the Pixel 4, but at the time it also had a matte frame and was less elegant than the Pixel 3 with a split back. To this day, however, I still love the Stormtrooper look.
