It’s long been said that gamer-sized computers use a lot of resources and light, so it’s always recommended to turn them off because of the power they’re supposed to consume, and that’s something everyone already takes for granted. Granted, however, there are those who want to directly test whether this is real, so one user experimented with two different devices, and left one of them for half a decade, with interesting results.
A user of Reddit Wanted to determine whether to maintain a pc Gamer turned on for five years affects its performance or energy consumption. The results show that there is no significant difference in performance or electricity bills. One of these PCs is turned on and the other is turned off every night. The intent was to answer the question of whether leaving it in sleep mode and never turning it off did any damage, concluding that not really, since the bill at the end of the month was about the same.
The pc The time in question was not fully turned on, because sleep mode was used at night. This shuts down peripherals and monitors, leaving only the RAM memory active, allowing work to resume exactly as it was left. And although energy consumption is low, the use of certain materials can reduce its useful life. RAM is active during sleep and can be depleted over time, as can processors and motherboards, but with minimal immediate response.
This scenario is common on dedicated server computers, where the operating system, such as Windows Server, is designed to be always on. These servers are usually in an environment with sufficient temperature to avoid overheating, which is not always the case with home PCs. So in the end, it also depends on the user and what condition the equipment is in so as not to have dire consequences in the future.
Author’s Note: The truth is, even though I know that electricity doesn’t use much, I prefer to turn it off so that there are no incidents related to power outages at night, especially when it’s monsoons and storms.
