Tilta announced a full ecosystem of accessories for the recently announced DJI RS 2 gimbal. The system includes Hydra Arm car mounting rigs, Counterbalance Handheld Rig, Ring Grips, and a variety of remote control handles, mounting arms, and more.
Only a few days ago DJI announced their new handheld gimbals. The DJI RS 2 is a successor to the Ronin-S while the DJI RSC 2 continues the legacy of the Ronin-SC as a smaller foldable gimbal for mirrorless cameras. It seems that Tilta has been working on an extensive line of accessories for the DJI RS 2 gimbal. Let’s take a look at it.
Tilta DJI RS 2 Ecosystem
Tilta says they have been collaborating with DJI since the initial development phase of the DJI RS 2 started. Apart from DJI’s own RS 2 accessories line, the Chinese company has officially authorized Tilta (which is also from China) with the development protocols for the peripheral interfaces.
Tilta claims that all products from the DJI RS 2 ecosystem have been tested by the DJI engineering team on a series of test/development shoots to improve the design, operation, and durability, which offers a certain degree of confidence about these accessory options.
Hydra Arm
The first set of Tilta accessories utilizes their Hydra Arm System for mounting on a car to get chase cam clips. Originally, the Hydra Arm was announced during NAB 2018 and was a much bigger product aiming at higher-budget shoots – check out our video about it here.
The Hydra Alien Car Mounting System is a portable mounting solution for the DJI RS 2 (or for the original DJI Ronin-S) with multiple suction cups. It can be installed on car doors, hoods, or any other flat surface. The camera placement can be easily switched from a high angle to low angle and other positions. It comes with a remote control hand unit that supports remote run/stop.
The Hydra Motorized Slider is a lightweight and versatile slider system that is fully collapsible for transport. It supports remote control, adjustable sliding speed, A-B stops, and more. It is compatible with all car types.
Aside from using it for car shots, the slider can also function as a table top smart dolly. With the DJI RS 2, users will be able to use motion time-lapse and different tracking modes.
Handheld Gimbal Counterbalance System
This counterbalance system makes it easier to handle heavier loads for longer takes. It includes vaist buckles to transfer the pressure from hands and shoulders. It works in a similar way like ARRI Trinity by adding the DJI RS 2 to a Steadicam-like rig. It is much easier to change camera position between low and high angles and achieve smoother movements.
Cable Camera System
Tilta’s Cable Camera System provides up to 100m of travel distance. The maximum payload is 10kg, so it is enough for the DJI RS 2 gimbal with a maximum tested payload camera rig.
The highest sliding speed is 4m/s. This system supports wireless control and ultrasonic autonomous obstacle avoidance. With a V-lock battery brick on top, the device offers multiple power output solutions for various cameras.
Handheld Operating Accessories
Finally, Tilta designed a whole lot of accessories to ease the handheld operation of the DJI RS 2 gimbal. Advanced Rear Operating Handle can control the gimbal remotely and it helps reduce the pressure from holding the gimbal for an extended amount of time. It also includes a cold shoe on top of the handle for monitors and other accessories.
Remote Control Handle controls directly the DJI RS 2 gimbal. It can operate video record, photo shoot, follow focus (with Nucleus Nano and Nucleus M), etc. Tilta’s Focus Handle can directly operate Nucleus Nano and Nucleus M for zoom and focus controls.
Basic Ring Grip and Advanced Ring Grip provide a better and wider grip solution. The basic version does not include controls in the ring itself. The Advanced Ring Grip encorporates both Tilta’s Remote Control Handles for gimbal control. The rings mimic the look of the larger DJI Ronin 2. They provide plenty of room to mount various accessories as well.
Dual-Handle Power Supply Bracket increases stability and makes it easier to handle longer takes. The gimbal can be powered by external V-Mount or Anton Bauer battery packs. The right side arm comes with a NATO slot, 1/4” and 3/8” mounting thread, cold shoe mount, and more expansion options.
Further Tilta accessories include various arms and brackets, cold shoe adapter, counterweights, and so on. They are designed to provide a better operating experience with the DJI RS 2.
Tilta also made a RS 2 Protection Package that includes a tempered glass screen protector, carbon fiber grip protector, and axis cover protector. According to Tilta, the protection package will be included with any of their RS 2 accessory free of charge.
Price and Availability
According to Tilta, all the accessories are going to be available in November or December 2020. Pricing has not been announced yet. We will update the article as soon as we get the information about prices.
We also plan to review a number of these accessories, so look out for those reviews in the coming months.
