Huawei is rarely reported in the country due to Google’s ban, but foldable consumers in China can hardly avoid the manufacturer.
Huawei will lead the Chinese foldable smartphone market with a 50 percent market share in the first half of 2023, according to a report by market research firm CNN Research on Monday.
Huawei is also clearly ahead in sales with the new flagship Mate X3 launched in March.
According to data from CINNO Research, foldable smartphone sales in China are expected to grow 72 percent year-over-year in the first half of 2023.
Sales of foldable devices rose 51 percent in the first quarter and 99 percent in the second quarter. This market share has now grown for eleven consecutive quarters.
Samsung and Vivo occupy third and fourth place in the sales ranking, followed by Honor, Xiaomi and Moto. 55 percent of devices sold in China have a horizontal folding mechanism. Here too, Huawei is ahead of Samsung and Honor.
With its new top-of-the-range smartphone Mate X3, among other things, Huawei has succeeded in leaving Samsung in the lucrative market for foldable devices in China. The strong growth shows that initial skepticism about folding technology is disappearing and more and more consumers are turning to these unfamiliar devices.
A bitter pill for Samsung, as the market leader had high hopes for foldable models. The plan also works in “Western” markets, but consumers in China seem skeptical about Samsung.
Samsung’s average global success in the foldable market is mainly due to the fact that the manufacturer has been there for a long time and (unlike Oppo, Xiaomi or Honor) quickly brought them to the global market. Technically speaking, the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip doesn’t seem to be the best foldable option if consumers prefer to go for alternatives. in china
Even in Samsung’s home country of South Korea, the company has recently had to cede market share to Apple in smaller target groups.
