TSMC says it will have an advanced ASML chipmaking tool in 2024


Executives at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said Thursday that the world’s largest chipmaker will have the next version of ASML Holding NV’s most advanced chipmaking tool in 2024.

The “Hi-NA UUV” tool generates focused light beams that create microscopic circuitry on computer chips used in artificial intelligence devices such as phones, laptops, cars and smart speakers. EUV means the ultimate ultraviolet, light wavelength used by ASML’s most advanced machines.

YJ Mii, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at TSMC’s Technology Symposium in Silicon Valley, said:

Mii did not say when the device, the second generation of ultra-ultraviolet lithography tools for making small and fast chips, would be used for mass production. TSMC rival Intel says it will use the machines in production by 2025 and will be the first to receive the machine.

If Intel enters the business of making chips designed by other companies, it will compete with TSMC for those customers.

Kevin Zhang, TSMC Senior Vice President for Business Development, made it clear that TSMC will not be ready for production in 2024 with the new high-NA EUV tool but will be used for research with most partners.

“The importance of TSMC in 2024 means that they will quickly reach the most advanced technology,” said Dan Hutchison, chip economist at TechInsights, who was at the symposium.

“The next major innovation in high-NA EUV technology that will lead to chip technology,” Hutcheson said.

On Thursday, TSMC gave more details about the technology for its 2nm chips, which are on track for volume production in 2025. TSMC says it has spent 15 years developing so-called “nanosheet” transistor technology to improve speed and energy efficiency. And will use it for the first time on its 2nm chips.
