Vivo X90 Mini: Exciting Compact Smartphone Announced

It’s not an isolated opinion that smartphones are too big these days – even if I don’t want to own one. With a diagonal of 6.7 inches, my iPhone 13 Pro Max is one of those devices that used to be called “phablets”, i.e. a mixture of tablet and smartphone. The phone doesn’t feel that big in my relatively large hands, but I understand that some people want a more compact smartphone again for various reasons.

The call for smaller smartphones is getting louder

Recently, for example, smartwatch pioneer and Pebble founder Eric Migikowski launched a related petition to major manufacturers like Google and announced that he would found his own company for the purpose if in doubt.

Now the first rumors about another manufacturer’s smartphone have surfaced. Chinese company Vivo, which is also gaining ground in Europe, may fulfill the dreams of some compact smartphone fans with the Vivo X90 Mini. As per the alleged specifications, the device is in the tough midfield. The concept image also shows the possible exterior of the smartphone.

The diagonal of the OLED display on the Vivo X90 Mini is said to be 5.88 inches and hence slightly smaller than another popular contender in the division, the ASUS Zenfone 9 (predecessor on review here). For comparison: The Google Pixel 6a, which some people interested in a smaller smartphone will definitely consider, measures 6.1 inches diagonally. Despite the small screen area, Vivo does not save the resolution and uses it in regular Full HD+ and a faster 120 Hertz.

Mid-range hardware, pretty good camera

According to the leak, there is a MediaTek 8200 under the hood, which is not world-class, but definitely enough for gaming and other daily tasks. There’s no information yet on storage equipment, but given the chip, 6GB of RAM and at least 128GB of storage is realistic. The cameras are impressive with 50 MP for the main sensor, 16 MP for the ultra wide angle and 10 MP for the telephoto camera. It is not yet known whether the more compact dimensions will result in a loss of battery capacity.

The render image shows the Vivo X90 Mini with a centered punchhole and thin, even screen bezels. The rear camera module seems to flow smoothly into the cover, which is known from smartphones like the Oppo Find X5 Pro.

As mentioned at the beginning, Vivo is represented in Germany with a few smartphones, but it remains to be seen if the Vivo X90 Mini will also appear in Germany – if not. After all, the options are few and far between. Are you interested in the device?
