With a new Android app, Google is bringing its AI models directly to Pixel smartphones, including older devices
Google has had the “Mainline” project for several years, establishing the ability to outsource critical system functions to Android. The goal is, on the one hand, to separate many Google and Pixel functions from Android and, on the other hand, to make them easier to maintain in the future through app updates.
Now there’s a new AI app called “AI Core”, which Google hasn’t revealed anything about yet. We can already imagine the background based on the name, but now there is a little more information about it. Because “AssembleDebug” again takes a deep look into the app’s source code and interface.
The new app brings important AI models directly to Google smartphones
AI Core is an important interface for offering AI functions to other apps. Various APIs show that this includes creating images, such as for AI wallpapers (from the Pixel 8). But the upcoming Gboard innovation, capable of proofreading and adapting entered text, will also be controlled through the AI core.
Initially the app was limited to Tensor G3 and Google Pixel 8 Pro, but according to the colleague we will soon see it on older Pixel smartphones as well. With this app, Google is likely bringing AI models directly to our devices. Thus, the AI core takes care of the AI functions that can be executed directly by the Tensor chipset.
It will be exciting to see what AI innovations will come to older Pixel models soon. I don’t think a device with Tensor G3 is necessary for everything. What could be exciting about this is the upcoming Pixel feature drop and thus the first quarterly update for Android 14, which is actually coming in December.
A thread🧵 –
What is the purpose of AiCore app?
Many people are wondering what this app is for? The Play Store description doesn’t provide much information other than – “The Al Core powers features across Android and delivers apps with the latest Al models.” #Google #Android pic.twitter.com/MAxR6Ec0Rw
