Will Samsung create AI miracles with cameras?

There’s always been a lot of promise, but so far no manufacturer has been able to deliver really good AI advancements in their camera smartphones. But Samsung is working hard to do just that with the Galaxy S24 series. Established industry insiders have exciting news for us.

As is well known, Samsung is removing the 10x telephoto camera from the Galaxy S24 Ultra and replacing it with a 5x telephoto camera. Which means no more optical 10x zoom. To reach this zoom level, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will rely on a 5x telephoto camera and extensive calculations by software.

The new telephoto camera compensates with resolution and AI

The insider in question, known to you as “Ice Universe,” claims to have already seen the recordings. According to him, image quality with Galaxy S24 with 10x zoom is still better than S23 Ultra. How is that supposed to be possible? Not only does Samsung rely on extensive help from AI for the more than 5x zoom, but also an image sensor with a significantly higher resolution of 50 MP instead of 10 MP for the 5x telephoto camera.

A potentially winning combination that still offers the high quality typical 10x zoom level that customers are used to from its predecessors. In everyday life, however, it’s definitely more practical to have “smaller” zoom levels like 3x and 5x on board via hardware, which is why Samsung is making this change.

Samsung will want to use AI to make its smartphone cameras truly work. This will also be necessary as the main camera’s image sensor has not changed. Galaxy AI is sure to be Samsung’s biggest thing in 2024, and it’s less than two weeks away (January 17).
