Apple’s iPhone series has had MagSafe for several years, and the feature is now coming to Android as well. To do this, we adopted Apple’s system in Qi2, a new generation of commonly used standards for wireless charging. But there is a problem.
The Qi2 isn’t as clean as we’d like. It is somewhat reminiscent of USB. After chaos due to poor communication, that situation clear now. However, they have clearly created a problem that is unnecessary.
The Qi2 is divided into two variants. One of them of course has no magnetic ring, but still supports “Qi v2.0 standard” up to 15 watts. A second version, which may actually carry the Qi2 logo, features a magnetic power profile, based on Apple’s MagSafe technology.
These magnetic rings have several advantages. On the one hand, the smartphone holds itself on the charger and on the other hand it is always in the perfect position for maximum charging performance.
Applicable to customers: Magnetic rings are only supported if the device actually has the Qi2 logo.
To date, the HMD Skyline remains the only Android phone with Qi2 support and a magnetic ring. In the case of the Galaxy S25 series, Qi2 is probably only supported by the case, but not by the phone itself.
