- XDA found MIUI 12 code that suggests Xiaomi is working on a foldable codenamed “Cetus.”
- The device reportedly features a Snapdragon processor and 108MP camera.
New code discovered by XDA Developers and one of its community members suggests Xiaomi may be working on a new foldable device. Digging through the latest Chinese beta of MIUI 12, XDA found references to a device codenamed “Cetus,” along with a number of hints that it’s a foldable. For instance, there’s a snippet of code that reportedly relates to how MIUI tracks the folding state of the device. XDA wasn’t able to find out much more about the device, but it did find evidence that suggests Cetus will feature a Snapdragon processor and a 108MP primary camera like the Mi Note 10.

As for the codename, cetus is the Latin form of the term the ancient Greeks used to describe sea monsters in their mythology. The Latin term for a whale, cetacean, is derived from the word. If you’re one who likes to read far too much into codenames, the suggestion here could be that we’re looking at a big device.
Display analyst Ross Young tweeted that China Star will start manufacturing screens for an 8-inch fordable by the end of the year, with Xiaomi releasing the device sometime next spring. However, we wouldn’t get too excited about the prospect of a Xiaomi foldable just yet. As XDA points out, the company has teased foldable concepts in the past, but has yet to release anything on that front to consumers.
