Subscriptions range from 1,440p
As Reddit users report, YouTube is currently testing a subscription limit for 4K resolution videos. For full resolution, please upgrade to YouTube Premium. No official statement has been made in this regard so far.
Currently, YouTube appears to be running an A/B test on the video platform, which will not allow select users without a premium subscription to choose the highest resolution. In such cases, the resolution menu says 2160p or 4K Premium-features Either that probably also applies to 8K, ie 4,320p. Obviously, the test is only performed on iOS devices.
With this move, YouTube will likely try to sell more subscriptions to YouTube Premium. So far, the subscription offers the following features: ad-free videos, offline video and background playback, YouTube Music Premium. In Germany it costs 11.99 euros per month or 119.99 euros per year. Alternatively, there is a family tariff (EUR 17.99/month) and a student tariff (EUR 6.99/month) to choose from.
Changes to the platform have received criticism in the past, for example when disliked ads were removed or additional ads were introduced before videos. Complaints about the Resolution subscription blocking test are already pouring in on Twitter and Reddit. It is unclear whether Google will actually implement the change. YouTube has yet to comment on the matter.
