At some point when Tensor will switch to chipsets, Google will rely on its own design.
This year, Google is installing the new Tensor G3 chipset in the Pixel 8 (Pro), which, like its predecessors, is based largely on Samsung’s Exynos. There will be improvements, but it’s still not an absolute high-end chip. When will google change it if they are already raising the price?
Google actually planned to use a completely custom processor for the Pixel 9 in 2024. But there have been delays, so unfortunately the plan won’t work, insiders now report Android Authority. The custom chip for the Pixel 9 therefore remains primarily a test platform.
The chipset on the Pixel 9 is just a minor update
Well, what is Google using in the coming year? It will likely be an improved version of the Tensor G3, as the code names suggest. While the Pixel 8’s chip is internally called “Zuma”, the Pixel 9’s chip is already known as “Zuma Pro”.
Google has done this before, the Tensor G2 “whitechapel pro” from the Pixel 7 (Pro) was a manageable improvement over the Tensor G1 “whitechapel”. Only the generation called “Laguna” will be a completely different custom chip, postponed to the Pixel 10 (2025).
Our own chip design will come a little later
The first chip with its own design is significantly more developed at Google and no longer at Samsung However, the basic components can still be bought or licensed and probably still from Samsung. Or from ARM, there are different providers.
This is definitely a very exciting project and we can’t wait to see when this move will end up in purchasable products. As you can see at Apple it can work extremely well with custom chips. I have two MacBooks with M1 and M2 chips, each of which is outstanding.
