My return to the world of Remnant II with The Awakened King DLC was filled with great anticipation. After playing the main game (re-evaluation) already praised for its unique blend of looter-shooter elements, a Dark Souls-like environment, and impressive Unreal Engine 5 graphics, my expectations for this DLC were correspondingly high. I was excited to see how the developers would expand and deepen the existing world and the new challenges and stories that awaited me.
We have kindly been contacted for this review the master provided, but this does not affect our honest opinion.
Story and Setting: Losman’s Legacy
The story of “The Awakened King” took me back to the Losomn biome, a place already enthralled by its complex and fascinating lore in the original game. This time the plot focuses on the growing conflict between the Fae and the Dran, two races caught in a spiral of enmity as their world merges. I found the story of the awakened Real King, a character previously only hinted at, particularly compelling. The narrative was enriched by interesting new and familiar NPCs, which not only gave me options to trade, but also delved deeper into the backstory and brought the setting of Losmon to life.
Gameplay Innovation: New Levels of Interaction
In terms of gameplay, “The Awakened King” builds on the tried and tested mechanics of the original game and adds new, exciting elements. Of particular note is the new archetype, the Ritualist, which brought new playstyles and skills and opened up new strategic possibilities for me. The increased skill cap of 85 gave me more freedom in designing my character. The introduction of new weapons, armor, and enemy types added additional challenges and made hunting for loot even more rewarding. These innovations gave the game a familiar yet refreshing dynamic
Level Design: A maze full of discoveries
The level design of The Awakened King stands out for its increased verticality and maze-like structure. This design gave a new dimension to the dungeons and environments and broke the linearity of the game. Losman’s world was fascinating as it unfolded before me, rich with secrets and hidden passages that made exploration both challenging and rewarding. This redesign created a new and inviting environment that encouraged me to thoroughly explore every corner of the world.
Graphics and Audio: Impressive environment
In The Awakened King, I was once again impressed with the graphics, although there were no significant improvements over the original game. The detailed and atmospheric design of the levels and environments contributed significantly to the immersion in Losman’s world. The quality of the voice acting and the atmospheric sound effects gave extra life and depth to the characters and environments. This combination of visual and audio design has created an impressive and immersive gaming experience that perfectly underlines the dark and mysterious world of Remnant II.
Technical aspects and game balance: room for improvement
While Awakening King impressed in many respects, there were some technical issues and game balance issues that hindered it at times. In particular, frame rate drops and minor bugs sometimes lead to frustrating moments. Balancing the number and type of enemies, especially in closed environments, sometimes leads to unwanted difficulties. These aspects marred the gaming experience somewhat, but did not significantly detract from the overall impression of the DLC, which continued and expanded many of the original game’s strengths.
Our Conclusion: A successful start to the DLC series
Overall, “Awakening Kings” has proven to be a worthwhile expansion that should appeal to both fans and newcomers to the original game. Despite some technical challenges and occasional balance issues, the DLC offered a thrilling adventure. Gameplay innovation and enhancements, combined with atmospheric level design and engaging story, make Awakening the King an exciting and rewarding experience that sets high expectations for Remnant II’s future expansions.
